Oceana County HFH is a locally run affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian housing organization. Keeping in line with the Bible, Oceana County HFH partners with potential homeowners to build decent affordable housing. Upon completion of the home a zero percent interest rate is applied to all mortgages.
Oceana County HFH is NOT A GIVE-AWAY PROGRAM. Partner families must meet current income guidelines and must provide proof of financial responsibility as well as proving that they have the ability to repay the mortgage and still afford taxes and insurance on the home. The average home built in 2008 by Oceana County HFH cost approximately $60,000.
Individual, church and corporate donors provide money and materials to build Habitat houses. Partner families themselves must invest hundreds of hours of labor (sweat equity) into building their homes and the homes of others. Additional labor is provided by volunteers. The mortgage payments go into a revolving Fund for Humanity that is used to build more houses.
By working together in our ministry, we are living by the principles that are outlined in the Bible in reference to charging interest on LOANED money. We are also continuing in the spirit of our forefathers who worked together to help each other build homes.
Our volunteers come from our communities and from elsewhere to help build here in Oceana County. Special thanks go to those who take the time out of their busy lives to bring so much comfort and love with them when they volunteer.
